The BATES  »NUMBERING MACHINE«  is a mechanical  self-inking  stamp
that automatically advances to the next consecutive number -OR- can
print the same number twice, three times or indefinetily, depending
on selection.  In an intermediate "Lock-Position" the number wheels
can be set or reset. The stamp has a bakelite body and it came in a
heavy used condition. "Bates Numbering"  was used in legal, medical
& business fields to place identifying numbers on  shipping orders,
documents, images ... and "bates numbering" became the synonym for!
