PRODUX   MULTATOR

The picture is taken on a cutting board with CM-GRID.
The broken plastic LEVER CAPS are replaced by colored INSULATOR PIPES
The LOWER DECIMAL SLIDER was broken and one BLACK MARKER is missing.
The UPPER DECIMAL SLIDER was missing and is replaced by a home made one.
CLIPS of the UPPER MARKERS are made of ALUMINUM - with glued CAP-PIECES.

BASIC SETTINGS:
===============

(a) Crank:
----------
The crank is to turned CLOCKWISE ONLY. The idle position is DOWN.

(b) Clearing Counter & Arithmetic units:
----------------------------------------
The counter & arithmetic units can be cleared ONLY TOGETHER.
Pull the CLEARING LEVER left on the carriage and release it.

(c) Shifting the Carriage:
--------------------------
Pushing the big CROSS-LEVER in the front right or left will move
the carriage one step right or left. The left position "1" is the
"Start Position".

(d) Counting:
-------------
It is intended, that the left 5 (yellow) digits in the carriage are
used as the counter. The counter will be activated, when the LEFT
LEVER [X] is switched UP to "1". There is NO 10s-Carry! The counter
is not activated, when the lever is switched down to "0".

(e) Add/Subtract Lever
-----------------------
Make sure the right lever [ - :  <---->  + x ] is DOWN !!!
Here "Subtraction is a Special Procedure": In its "up" position of
the lever THERE WILL BE "1" ADDED. See details in "Subtraction" ...

ADDITION:
=========
Example:     123 + 45 + 6  =  174

Clear input, counter & arithmetic units.

Enter the 1st number (123) in the far right of the input unit. Make
a (clockwise) turn with the crank to transfer the number into the
arithmetic unit. The counting unit (when activated) displays the
figure 1. Enter the 2nd number (45). Make a 2nd turn with the crank
to add the number. The arithmetic unit displays the sum (168) and
the counting unit displays the figure 2. Enter the 3rd number (6).
Make a 3rd turn with the crank to add the number. The arithmetic unit
displays the sum (174) and the counting unit displays the figure 3.

MULTIPLICATION:
===============
Example:     123 x 45  =  5535

Clear input, counter & arithmetic units. Activate the counter unit.

Enter the multiplicand (123) in the far right of the input unit. The
multiplicator (45) has two digits, so the carriage is shifted to its
position 2. Make (clockwise) turns with the crank, until the 1st figure
of the multiplicator (4) will appear in the 2nd position of the counter
unit. Shift the carriage to position 1. Repeat making turns with the
crank, until the 2nd figure of the multiplicator (5) appears in the 1st
position of the counter. The multiplication is done: The multiplicand
(123) stays in the input unit, the multiplicator (45) is in the counter
unit and the result (5535) is in the arithmetic unit.

MULTIPLICATION WITH BACK-TRANSFER:
==================================
Example:     123 x 45 x 67  =  370845

Start with the "Multiplication" example above as described. The arithmetic
unit has the intermediate result (5535). Set all input levers to "zero".
With the right hand turn the crank until there is a light resistance (the
carriage will be lifted against the input unit). With the left hand pull
the CLEARING LEVER on the left side, release it and release the crank.
The content of the arithmetic unit in the carriage is transfered to the
input unit and the arithmetic unit is cleared. The 3rd multiplicator (67)
has two digits, so the carriage is shifted to position 2. Make (clockwise)
turns with the crank, until the 1st figure of the multiplicator (6) will
appear in the 2nd position of the counter unit. Shift the carriage to
position 1. Repeat making turns with the crank, until the 2nd figure of
the multiplicator (7) appears in the 1st position of the counter. The
multiplication is done: the result (370845) is now in the arithmetic unit.

SUBTRACTION:
============
Addition is the only operation directly performed on the PRODUX. For
subtraction an indirect method of addition is adopted. The input unit
contains LARGE and a SMALL FIGURES on each lever. The small figures are
the machine complements of the large figures:

  (Main-)LARGE figures  =   1   2   3   4   5   6   7   8   9
         SMALL figures  =   8   7   6   5   4   3   2   1   0

In BURROUGHS or COMPTOMETER Calculators a "2-Step Methode" for the
"9s-Complement" is required - BUT ...

   IN THE PRODUX A "SPECIAL-1-STEP-METHODE" IS USED:

In the "up" position of the [-: <----> +x] Lever THERE WILL BE "1" ADDED.

Example:     123 - 45 - 67  =  11
---------------------------------
Clear input, counter & arithmetic units.

Enter the 1st number (123) in the far right of the input unit. Make a
turn with the crank to transfer the number into the arithmetic unit.
After this is done, SET ALL LEVERS UP - incl. the right [ -/+ ] lever.

Enter the 1st subtrahend (45) in the right columns USING THE  s m a l l
FIGURES. (Ignore the display in the circular windows!) -- Turn the
crank and read the intermediate result (78) in the arithmetic unit.
Enter the 2nd subtrahend (67) in the right columns using again the
small figures. Turn the crank and read (11) in the arithmetic unit.

REMARK: NEGATIVE RESULTS are displayed in the arithmetic unit
             as the COMPLEMENT of the next higher 10, 100, 1000, ...

             Example:   -12  =  99...9988

D O   N O T   F O R G E T   TO SWITCH DOWN THE  [ - : <----> + x ]  LEVER

DIVISION:
=========
Example:     22 / 7 = 3.1428  Remainder 4
-----------------------------------------
Clear input, counter & arithmetic units; set all levers DOWN.
Set arithmetic unit to the far right.

Enter the divident (22) in the right columns, make a turn with the crank
to transfer into arithmetic unit.
Set all levers over the divident UP, additional the TWO LEFT NEIGHBORS
and the right [ - : <----> + x ] LEVER UP (= "Subtraction Mode").
Enter the divisor (07) above the divident, use the SMALL figures.
Turn the crank as often as the divisor is to subtract from the divident
(=3 times; remainder=1). Move the arithmetic unit one step to the left.
Continue in the same way cranking and moving the arithmetic unit ...
The result (3.1428) is left and the remainder (4) right in the arithmetic.

D O   N O T   F O R G E T   TO SWITCH DOWN THE  [ - : <----> + x ]  LEVER
