based on the book of L.Dingwerth »Historische Schreibmaschinen« (2003)
Named "Rheinische Metallwaren und Maschinenfabrik", the company was
founded 1889 from Heinrich Ehrhardt in Duesseldorf to produce munitions.
1901 a bankrupt gone weapon factory in Soemmerda was bought and became
big business in WWI with 10000 employees. After the war, 8500 lost their
jobs (= Contract of Versailles) and the company searched for production
of "peace objects". The choice was made for typewriters and calculators.
1921 the first »RHEINMETALL« typewriter was on the market. 1933 another
bankrupt company, A.BORSIG , was integrated. The name was changed to
RHEINMETALL-BORSIG AG and became one of the biggest German companies
with 50000 employees. Typewriter and calculators were side-productions.
Big business was weapons, lokomotives, whole factories, ...
After WWII Soemmerda was in East-German territory and the company
became a GDR-run business. 1945 the typewriter and calculator
production resumed and 1952 the company was named "VEB Mechanik Buero-
maschinenwerk Soemmerda". In the beginning 60s the name became
SUPERMETALL and later DARO-SOEMTRON . 1977 the typewriter production
ended. After Germany's unification the company was 1992 liquidated.
