The North
If you miss out visiting the north of Cameroon you have only seen half of what the country can offer. Just taking the "Trans Camerounaise" which is the only transport to recommend to go there is an adventure itself. As it moves slowly up north you get to see the transformation from tropical countryside to vast dry savannah land.
The North is the Moslem part of the country. Here you see the finer faces of the Fulfulde people who wear their traditional robes and pray whereever they are if it's time for it.
The people here still remain close to their religions and live together in little villages or communities completely cut off from electricity lines and water. Even Cameroon's third biggest city, Maroua, appears more like a huge village where you find more mopeds on the streets than cars and more than anything else bikes.
Maroua is the optimal starting-point for visits to touristic spots in the north. Must-Sees here are of course Waza National Parc but also Rhumsiki with its stunning background of toothshaped mountains. |
