" In 1857 the German firm of Bernhardt Stoewer of Stettin-Gunhof, was well
established as a manufacturer of sewing-machines and bicycles ... "

It sounds like the history of ...
        ADLER, BROTHER, SEIDEL & NAUMANN, TRIUMPH, WANDERER, ...

In 1903 they started to produce typewriters.  Their first 3-bank machine "was
extremely well made and quite successful". From 1905 on their 4-bank machines
"had all attributes of a modern well constructed typewriter".  STOEWER  was
"one of the most prominent typewriter manufacturers on the Continent and were
awarded seven gold medals for high-class workmanship".  Their  RECORD  was
marketed in England as SWIFT and CONQUEROR.  Also a portable typewriter, the
ELITE was produced: As a 3-bank in the beginning - later as a 4-bank machine.
Because financial difficulties in 1930 the production stopped after 27 years.
Their machines were  "well designed  and  could have been  one of the most
important typewriters in history.  Fate decided otherwise, however,  and it
never achieved the place in the world that it rightly deserved."
